Longsuffering Love

Puritan Thomas Watson (1620-1686) reminds us of love that is “longsuffering”—patient with the weaknesses and failings of others. (Eph. 4:2). Many think of puritans as harsh and unloving. These words from his Divine Cordial (noted by Chris Anderson) show the warmth of Christian love embraced by the puritans … and all who love the Father (1 John 4:19-21).

We love a saint, though he has many personal failings. There is no perfection here. In some, rash anger prevails; in some, inconstancy; in some, too much love of the world. A saint in this life is like gold in the ore, much dross of infirmity cleaves to him, yet we love him for the grace that is in him. A saint is like a fair face with a scar: we love the beautiful face of holiness, though there be a scar in it. The best emerald has its blemishes, the brightest star their twinklings, and the best of the saints have their failings. You that cannot love another because of his infirmities, how would you have God love you?

We love the saints though in some lesser things they differ from us. Perhaps another Christian has not so much light as you, and that may make him err in some things; will you presently unsaint him because he cannot come up to your light? Where there is union in fundamentals, there ought to be union in affections.

Thanksgiving and Squanto

The history of the Thanksgiving holiday in America is the story of God’s gracious dealings with the pilgrims as they came to this land. One of the Lord’s provisions was a man named Squanto (Tisquantum). His story is well described in the book Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving, by Eric Metaxas. The fuller story of the pilgrims is well described in Barbara Rainey’s book, Thanksgiving, A Time to Remember. The dramatic audio presentation of Squanto’s story is great for the whole family. You can listen to it here: Part 1. Part 2.

Valuable Resources on Mormonism and the Bible

www.Sourceflix.com offers many good videos on the Bible and archaeology. Their video on Jericho is excellent—I use it when I teach an Old Testament survey at our local community college. Of particular interest from this ministry based in Utah are a number of videos on Mormonism. Two that I have watched are very well done:

The Bible vs. Joseph Smith

The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon

This ministry produces a number of videos and makes many of them available for free viewing online. When they charge, the price is $7. With the issue of Mormonism so visible, it is a great help to have such material so readily available.

Dabney’s Systematic Theology Free in Kindle Format

R.L. Dabney (1820-1898) was a Southern Presbyterian who served as a pastor (of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church), professor (at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and the newly formed University of Texas at Austin), and also as a military officer (chief of staff to General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson). His Lectures in Systematic Theology is the syllabus and notes he used to teach theology. The text is nicely converted to Kindle format and is free. Unfortunately, while it looks like the Greek quotes are transliterated, the Hebrew becomes meaningless text. For example in the chapter “The Fall and Original Sin,” the Greek expression Ἡ ἁμαρτία ἐστὶν ἡ ἀνομία (1 Jo 3:4) becomes H amartia estin h anomia. But the Hebrew term חֲטָאָֽה becomes ha;f;j}. Still, Dabney’s work is a valuable contribution and the price is perfect.

Naselli on Keswick Theology

Andy Naselli has a posted short article that summarizes his excellent dissertation on Keswick Theology. The article, “Why ‘Let Go and Let God’ Is a Bad Idea,” may be found here.

Naselli summarizes several weaknesses of Kewick theology:

1. Disjunction: It creates two categories of Christians. This is the fundamental, linchpin issue.
2. Perfectionism: It portrays a shallow and incomplete view of sin in the Christian life.
3. Quietism: It tends to emphasize passivity, not activity.
4. Pelagianism: It tends to portray the Christian’s free will as autonomously starting and stopping sanctification.
5. Methodology: It tends to use superficial formulas for instantaneous sanctification.
6. Impossibility: It tends to result in disillusionment and frustration for the “have-nots.”
7. Spin: It tends to misinterpret personal experiences.

Notes and audio from a fuller presentation may be downloaded here.

The dissertation is currently only published in digital format. It may be purchased here.

Naselli has done us a great service by producing these helpful and insightful resources.
