“It Is Well” Manuscript Online

This Lord’s Day morning we closed the service by singing “It Is Well with My Soul.” As I watched the congregation singing, I was reminded how meaningful this song is to so many.

With that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to pass along one of those treasures of historical archives (in this case, the Library of Congress): a picture of the original manuscript penned by Horatio Spafford. The background of the manuscript is described here.

As you study the manuscript, note that that final line is not what is in our hymn books and that an alternative was already penciled in. Apparently Spafford had not yet arrived at a satisfactory conclusion. The version in our hymnals is a marked improvement.
