A Puritan Sermon Introduction

Often, preachers and public speakers are exhorted to labor to develop brilliant introductions that capture the hearts and minds of their audience. I was struck by the introduction given by Thomas Goodwin (1600-1679) as he began his first sermon (on 1:1-2) in a masterful series on Ephesians:

Although the matter of the two first verses is found almost in every epistle, and is accordingly expounded by every interpreter, yet, that there may not be an uncomely vacuity at the very first entrance, I shall add some animadversions upon the words of them.
